What is molecular biology? The term has more than one dei nition. Some define it very broadly as the attempt to understand biological phenomena in molecular terms. But this dei nition makes molecular biology difi cult to distinguish from another well-known discipline, biochemistry.
Another definition is more restrictive and therefore more useful: the study of gene structure and function at the molecular level. This attempt to explain genes and their activities in molecular terms is the subject matter of this book.
Molecular biology grew out of the disciplines of genetics and biochemistry. In this chapter we will review the major early developments in the history of this hybrid discipline, beginning with the earliest genetic experiments performed by Gregor Mendel in the mid-nineteenth century.
